Versatility Ranch Horse

Versatility Ranch Horse

What is a Versatility Ranch Horse Show? Versatility is the fastest growing segment of the western horse show world. These shows feature five classes meant to exhibit the skills that were required of ranch horses in the old west. Horses then were asked to do a little bit of everything and sometimes a cowboy’s life was trusted to a faithful mount. In modern times riders of all walks can enjoy the pleasure of a well rounded horse, the communication between horse and rider it takes to compete in Versatility will give you so much more confidence in any discipline. The rider that is only interested in casual riding will enjoy learning maneuvers in the ranch reining that translate in easier ride on the trail. The dedicated arena rider will see how well a horse does after taking a break from its usual routine, and any rider will find that chasing cows is plain ol’ fun. Maybe the best part of this fun event is that everyone helps and cheers for each other. Oh sure! There is competition but it is all part of the fun. There are divisions for rank beginners all the way up to advanced riders and there is even a division for the kids. So it is a family sport! There will be four shows this year all with prizes. Belt buckles and prizes are given for year end awards in each division. Come to one of our clinics to get ready for the shows! You will have a great time!  This is a brief description of what to expect in each class-
Ranch Trail- Tasks are designed to represent ranch work like opening a gate. This class focuses on the rider guiding their horse over and through obstacles similar to ones you would run into out on the trail. Stepping over fallen trees, walking through water, and dragging logs are a few things to expect. Just like out on the trail every course is different and presents a new challenge.

Ranch Cutting- the rider enters the herd without disrupting it, cuts one cow from the herd, and demonstrates an ability to keep the cow separate. Then it is guided into a pen on the opposite end of the arena from the herd. This represents what cowboys had to do to doctor cows or brand them.

Ranch Riding- In this class all the riders from your division are in the arena with you. The riders are asked to take their horses through different gaits from a walk to a lope. Unlike some western pleasure competitions judges in versatility look for the horse’s natural gait and headset. He is looking for the horse that he would want to ride across the ranch to fix fence or check on the cows. A horse with comfortable gaits that still travels well.

Working Ranch Horse- There are three parts to this class. The first part is Ranch Reining which consists of riding the horse in a pattern of circles, spins, stops and backing. Once your pattern is complete a cow is let into the arena. The horse and rider demonstrate an ability to control the cow by making a series of stops and turns at the end of the arena then turning the cow along the fence. After the turns are complete the rider then ropes, dallies and stops the cow. (Green Horse/Green Rider and Youth don’t have to do the roping portion)

Conformation- In the class the horse is unsaddled and put into just a halter to be shown to the judge. Each horse will be judged on appearance and correctness of it’s build.

You must show in at least 3 of the 4 shows. On the day of the show if there is only one rider in a division prizes will not be awarded for that division, but points will count toward year end awards. A rider must compete against another rider in at least two shows to qualify for year end awards. A horse may only be ridden by one rider in a show. Youth may enter other divisions as well. You must compete on the same horse all year for points to count towards year end. If a contestant wishes to participate on more than one horse they may compete in the division they qualify for and a higher division with the second horse.
