Breeding Management School

Carl WoodDoubletree Horse Farms is a no-nonsense Breeding, Training and Stallion Facility that ships and receives semen from all over the country. Carl Wood, the Owner and Director, has been managing his own facility for more than 30 years and is a recognized expert in the field of Equine Breeding Management. In addition to everyday "hands-on" experience, he has attended post graduate courses at Colorado State University (CSU) and continues to enhance his knowledge as information and technology change. Carl continually seeks technical advice and updates from CSU, Cal Davis, Texas A&M, and other experts in the field.

Many colleges and universities offer what they call "short courses”. At their course you will sit in a lecture hall with 70 other people, or if you go to the lab you will try to see over those 70 people while trying to watch instructors demonstrate.  We offered a 5 day course here at Doubletree for the past 10 years. Owner/operators and students came from all over the United States to learn how to run their own breeding operations. We reached a lot of people but felt that there was still a lot more we could do for the individual operations. Carl decided that if he came to you and your place he could offer a more tailor made program. The economy, the over stock of horses, and the closing of kill plants has made the breeder more determined than ever to produce only a few of the very best horses possible. Carl now takes to the road to come to your facility. It offers you more in that he can also help you set up your facility in a way that works for you. He actually gets to work with your horses and shows you things like how to handle those horses in the safest way possible. You learn artificial insemination, collection and evaluation of semen, storage of cooled semen, shipping and receiving of cooled semen, learn to use frozen semen. Ultrasound usage and palpation techniques. You can make the instruction what you want to learn and how to make everything work in your best interest.

Breeding Managment SchoolCarl covers the mare in depth, and the drugs and hormones used in timing and manipulating the estrus cycle. He will cover all of the topics in this curriculum. You get it all in just one all inclusive visit where most universities make you attend up to three courses to get the same information. One thing we pride ourselves on is that this instruction does not end when Carl leaves your facility. You are encouraged to call anytime about questions or problems that you have after he is gone. We get lots of feed back from our students and it's all positive.  In order to help you save money we will show you how to build an A.V., incubator, and many other things you will use as well as what you really need. Colleges loose sight of the value of a dollar since they have unlimited funds in which to spend, where most of us are limited in the amount we can spend on equipment and supplies. Carl’s objective is that you have the knowledge and "hands on" experience to successfully run and operate your own breeding facility.

You will actually get to do an Artificial Insemination.  The ultrasound will be used and explained if you have one, and new information in embryo transfer, frozen semen and embryos, and super ovulation are all discussed. You will also be left with a work book to answer those questions that always come up after Carl’s visit. It serves as a great reminder in case your memory didn’t take in everything you were exposed to.

Student Testimonial -

"We had a very good breeding season, and I recommend your class to everyone. As you know I have only my wife and myself to do the job here, and I was covered up here with mares along with shipping. AI saved me as I had to do nearly all breeding by AI only enough live cover to keep the stallion interested. It's amazing that (I use a spayed jump mare) he will now just go up on her and wait for me to put the AV on to collect him. I sometimes have trouble with confidence in my ability to do preg checks early on (17-21 days) but those that a long travel distance I have the vet check before sending them home. It's a lot easier to ship semen and have them worry about it on the other end. But as you told us there are vets and vets that can do it right. Those that do it right really do it right and those that don't get changed.  Keep up the good work."
